Having lived in many states, I have experienced several local attitudes towards politics. In some areas, it was like living as a red dot in a sea of blue. In others, it was a blue dot in a sea of red. A government and elected officials are in existence to provide services to people. If they do not provide the services, those positions need to be filled with people that will provide those services.
It is a Hobson's choice for politicians to have to be on a constant fund raising tour. Ideally, if they are serving the needs of all the people in their constituency, then getting re-elected would be a cinch. But, there are people that believe just one thing is more important than all the other things that a government performs, and it is worth obstructing the government in order to have that one thing be paramount.
